VARIAC
A trade name for an autotransformer (formerly) used to dim lighting by
tapping a selected reduced voltage off the transformer's winding. Not to be
confused with resistance dimming.
VARILITE
A company which manufactures, rents and supports a complete automated
fixture and control system. A pioneer in automated fixture technology,
Vari-Lite suplies its own console operators and repair technicians for most
applications. Var-Lite equipment is only available as a rental package.
VEILING REFLECTION
A reflection on the visual task that obscures visibility by reducing
contrast.
VENUE
A local theater or arena where a touring show will load-in.
VIRTUOSO
Moving light control console made by VariLite.
VISUAL CUE
A cue taken by a technician from the action on stage rather than being cued
by the stage manager. Often abbreviated to "Vis".
VOLTAGE
The electric potential which exists between two components in an electrical
system. Lamps are rated in terms of wattage at a specific voltage. Operating
a lamp at another voltage from that which it is rated may cause the lamp to
burn at less than full intensity or to burn out very quickly.

VRMS / VOLTS ROOT MEAN SQUARED
The average value of an AC voltage. With an AC source the VRMS voltage gives
the same heating effect on an element as its equivalent DC voltage. e.g.
240VRMS will heat a lamp to the same temperature as 240V DC. even though the
240VRMS source will have peaks inexcess of 300V.
