S
SCENE
A single stationary display of light. A single step within a chase or a program.
SCENE MACHINE (TM)
A special effects projector manufactured and marketed by The Great American Market. Different effects heads are available for the Scene Machine such as the motor driven film loop, rotating disc effects, etc.
SCOOP
A special type of floodlight consisting of a lamp mounted in a large ellipsoidal reflector. The body of the instrument is usually circular which means a soft edged circular beam is produced. A standard FLOOD has a rectangular body.
SCR (SILICON CONTROLLED RECTIFIER)
A solid state electronic remote controllable dimming device. An SCR is essentially an electronic switch which achieves the affect of dimming by turning an electrical circuit on and off rapidly over a specific time interval. Most SCR dimmers can only be used to dim incandescent lamps. Other electronic dimmers use similar devices under other names such as the SSR, and include many other sophisticated electronic filtering, control, and circuit monitoring and protection circuitry.
SCREEN (PROJECTION)
Many types of projection screen are available. Some are multi-purpose, some only for front projection, some only for back projection. If a screen is not self-supporting, it often has eyelets around the outside edge which are used to "lace" the screen onto a larger frame.
SCREWBASE CFL
A compact fluorescent lamp with a ballast that has a medium screwbase that fits into the standard incandescent lamp socket. A screwbase compact fluorescent lamp may either be modular, in which the lamp and ballast are separate pieces, or self-ballasted, in which the lamp and ballast are inseparable. Both types are designed to replace incandescent lamps.
SCRIM
- A coarse gauze
- A fine metal mesh used to reduce the intensity of light from TV lanterns without affecting color temperature.
- One of many types of woven gauze-like scenic materials. A scrim will appear as opaque when lit primarily from in front, or can become transparent when objects are lit behind it.
- Scrim material made into a curtain, when lit from the front it appears opaque, when lit from behind the scrim appears transparent.
