S SCANNER
Scanners are intelligent lighting that can control the position of a beam of light using either a mirror or by moving the light source itself. Most scanners also have the ability to change colors and gobos.

Chain or wire fixed around lantern and lighting bar or boom to prevent danger in the event of failure of the primary support (eg Hook Clamp). A requirement of most licensing authorities. In the UK, current legislation
SANDNET
Network operating system integrating standard communications protocols with a multitude of industry and manufacturer-specific control protocols.
SATURATION
The purity of a color, or with spectral colors, how much of a color is near the dominant wavelength. Primary colors are very saturate, while pale tones are said to be desaturated.
SATURATION RIG
An arrangement of lanterns in which to maximum number of spotlights is placed in every possible position.
SAVE
- To extinguish a particular lighting instrument (e.g. "Save 14"). The instrument's lamp (and its color filter) are thus saved for another occasion. Used when setting up lighting states.
- Lighting design shorthand for "take a channel to a level of zero." ot to be confused with the term [Record] used to store a cue in a computer console's memory.
SCANNER
General name for a moving mirror lantern, especially those used in discos, rather than the more flexible units used in theater.
SCENE
- A pre-programmed lighting state which can be faded in and out during a one night show when there's no time for plotting.
- A subdivision of a play.
