INCANDESCENT LAMP
A lamp which creates light by heating up a thin filament, usually tungsten wire. Most standard household light bulbs as will as tungsten halogen lamps are incandescent. The color temperature of most incandescent lamps ranges from 1800 Kelvin to about 3800 Kelvin.
INDEPENDENT
- An electrical power supply that is totally separate from the stage lighting control. Used for testing lanterns prior to connection to the lighting system and also for powering non-lighting equipment on stage and working lights.
- A channel within the stage lighting control which has been temporarily switched to become independent from the rest of the channels which remain under the control of the operator.
INDEX OF REFRACTION
Ratio of the velocity of light in a vacuum to that in the medium. Thus n = c/v and is a number greater than one. Indexes of refraction are a function of the wavelength of the incident light.
INDUCTIVE LOADS
Inductive Loads are lighting that has a transformer or ballast between the mains and the lamp. Due to the nature of a transformer or ballast the lighting unit will draw more current than an equivalent resistive lamp. To ensure that an output is capable of driving such a load the output rating for inductive loads is usually about 75% of the rating for resistive loads.
INFRA-RED
Invisible part of the electromagnetic spectrum with a longer wavelength than visible light. Infra-red remote controls are used for lighting desks and practicals. An infra-red-sensitive CCTV camera can pick up body heat activity even in a "blackout".
INFRARED RADIATION
Any radiant energy within the wavelength range of 770 to 106 nanometers is considered infrared energy.
INHIBIT
A way of taking control of a rogue lantern (or lanterns) at the lighting desk during the operation of a show and removing them from any further lighting states, until the inhibit is removed. Can also be used for removing the front of house lighting from a curtain call state..
INJECTION MOLDING
Process for manufacturing plastic lenses whereby hot liquid plastic is injected into a lens mold of desired shape and size.
INSERT
- An additional route into a sound desk.
- An extra lighting state added into the sequence later.
INSTALLATION
- An electrical system in a particular building
- A piece of art designed to transform a particular room or building into something other than a room in an art gallery. Installations often use complex audio-visual equipment and can be intensely immersive experiences.
