HALIDES
The metal-halogen compounds, known as halides, remain stable at high temperatures, and do not cause deterioration of the quartz arc tube, which they would do if left in their elemental forms.

HALOGEN CYCLE
Chemical process occurring in Tungsten Halogen lamps which makes them possible. During the lamps life, Tungsten evaporates from the filament, and would normally deposit itself on the glass wall of a Tungsten lamp, causing it to blacken, and causing the output of the lamp to reduce until it finally blew. In a Tungsten Halogen lamp, the Tungsten combines with the Halogen gas elements present in the lamp envelope and is re-deposited back onto the filament. This process needs a very high temperature to operate, so Tungsten Halogen lamps are able to be a lot smaller, and run a lot hotter, than their Tungsten equivalents.

HALOGEN LAMP
An incandescent lamp that employs a halogen-gas additive to improve lamp life and efficacy.

HANG
The "hang" is the American equivalent of the lighting rigging session in the UK - the time when the lighting equipment is rigged.

HANGING POINT
The point where rigging is attached to a truss or piece of scenery. Location of hanging points must be determined for structural safety, but must be reconciled with available pickup points in the building or structure to which the truss is being rigged.

HARMONICS
A sinusoidal component of a periodic wave or quantity having a frequency that is an integral multiple of the fundamental frequency. For example, a component of the frequency, which is twice the fundamental frequency, is called the second harmonic.

HARMONY
Range of 1000W lanterns produced by Rank Strand (now Strand Lighting) in the UK.

HAZE MACHINE
Produces a fine mist for enhancing lighting effects

HAZE MACHINE (HAZER)
A device, similar to a fog machine, which produces a light, fine atmosphere by atomizing a special haze fluid. Since a haze machine does not utilize a heat exchange system, like a fogger, there is no warm up time. The atmosphere produced by a haze machine is dense enough to reveal beams of light in the air, but not so dense as to become opaque.

HEADS
The top lantern on a lighting boom.
