DISCHARGE LAMP
A high-powered source of light produced by means of an electrical discharge between two electrodes. An arc light, for example uses a discharge between two carbon rods which are manually or automatically fed together as they are burnt up. The use of this type of lighting is restricted to non-dimming applications such as followspots and projection, where dimming is achieved by mechanical means. Many of the new generation of moving lights use discharge lamps, dichroic filters and mechanical dimming shutters.

DISCOMFORT GLARE
Glare that produces discomfort. It does not necessarily interfere with visual performance or visibility.

DISCONNECT
(US) Also known as a COMPANY SWITCH, this is a large capacity power connection point on/near the stage which touring companies can use to connect their equipment.

DISSOLVE UNIT
Interface connected between two or more slide projectors and a tape player. Synchronisation signals recorded onto the tape are detected by the dissolve unit and fade up the lamp in one slide projector while changing the slide in the other, and then vice versa, producing a dipless crossfade between the two images.

DISTRIBUTION BOARD
System of interconnected fuse carriers and cabling that routes an incoming power supply to a number of different outputs. Known as DISTRO.

DJ MIXER
Used to combine, blend, cross fade and adjust sound levels from devices such as CD players, tape decks and/or MP3 players.

DMX
A system of passing information from a lighting controller to dimmer packs, switch packs or intelligent lighting. Each Channel of a DMX system will take the control for 1 channel of a dimmer or switch pack. When used with intelligent lighting each DMX channel controls an aspect of the lighting head e.g., Pan position or color With the Present standard DMX[512] will support up to 512 channels.

DMX (DIGITAL MULTI-PLEX)
DMX 512 is a standard dimmer control protocol implemented by U.S.I.T.T. to provide a means for interfacing dimming and control equipment from different manufacturers. A single DMX control cable carries dimmer intensity information for 512 dimmers serially down 2 wires. Many other devices can be controlled via DMX. Examples include fog machines, strobe lights, and automated fixtures. These devices, developed since DMX was first implemented, may interpret the DMX intensity data in different ways. An automated fixture, for example, may interpret a level of 50 on dimmer 1 as meaning move mirror in the x direction to the mid-way point.

DMX CONTROLLER
Digital multiplex (DMX), an industry standard control protocol for the transmission of dimmer intensity or other data using a digital multiplex method.

DOME
Follow spot location usually at rear of the upper gallery. Also referred to as BIOBOX (shortened version of BIOGRAPH BOX, after it's original function as a cinema projection box). A Followspot in any location (from the above).
