D
DIMMER RACK
- A number of individual dimmer circuits mounted in a cabinet.
- Dimmer racks contain individual dimmer modules arranged for convenient electrical connection. Some racks are designed for permanent installation, while touring racks are designed for portable use. Dimmer racks typically contain 6, 12, 24, or 48 dimmer modules typically with 2 dimmers per module.
DIMMING SHUTTER
Mechanical way of dimming the light output from a discharge lamp or projector when dimming the lamp is not possible. Consists of a series of horizontal blades which are rotated to reduce and then cut the light completely.
DIN
Deutscher Industrie Normen. European standard covering audio connectors and tape equalization characteristics.
DIODE
A device with two electrodes, in particular an anode and a cathode, and a non-linear current/voltage characteristic.
DIP
- Small covered trap at stage level containing electrical outlets. (US equivalent is FLOORPOCKET).
- Lighting equipment on stands at stage level. (e.g. "We're just focusing the dips now")
- Low lighting intensity when cross fading between two higher states - "there's a dip between these two states".
- Transparent lacquer for coloring lamp bulbs - known as "Lamp Dip".
DIRECT CURRENT
Electric current that flows in one direction only (e.g. from a battery). Abbreviated to DC.
DIRECT GLARE
Excessive brightness from a source of light in the line of sight. Luminairs with poor optical control can be sources of direct glare.
DISABILITY GLARE
Excessive brightness from a source of light in the line of sight. Luminairs with poor optical control can be sources of direct glare.
DISCHARGE LAMP
A lamp that insted of having a filament has two electrodes in a near vacuum, when the power is applied a high voltage is generated that makes an arc across the two electrodes emmitting a very intense light.
