C
CIRCUIT BREAKER
An electro-mechanical "fuse" that can be resetrather than having to be replaced. Available in the same ratings as fuses.
CITT
Canadian Institute for Theater Technology.
CLEANERS
Auditorium working lights. Used for cleaning and setting up the auditorium before the house lights (usually more atmospheric) are switched on.
CLOVE HITCH
Invaluable knot that every technician should know.
CMY
Cyan / Magenta / Yellow - the three secondary (additive) colors of light which are used in moving lights for color mixing. Some cheaper systems use three raduated color scrolls (one of each color) in front of a standard fixture but these take a massive amount of intensity out of the beam resulting in a dim light on stage. Many moving lights use a similar system with dichroic colors which are more efficient and longer-lasting.
COEFFICIENT OF UTILIZATION
The ratio of luminous flux (lumens) calculated as received on the work plane to the total luminous flux (lumens) emitted by the lamps alone.
COLD CATHODE
An electric-discharge lamp whose mode of operation is that of a glow discharge and that has electrodes so spaced that most of the light comes from the positive column between them.
COLDEST SPOT
Fluorescent lamp operation depends upon the mercury pressure inside the bulband this pressure is determined by the temperature of the coolest point of the lamp.
COLOR BOOM
Used in front of a spotlight with multiple color filters to rapidly change color of projected light.
COLOR BOOMERANG
A levered frame device within a followspot in which allows different color filters to be introduced into the beam. Standard followspot boomerangs have space for 6 or 7 different colors to be inserted. During a show individual or combined frames can be quickly added or dropped from the beam as needed.
