CHAIN HOIST
A lifting device comprised of an electric motor and gear/chain drive system. Chain hoists are commonly used to lift portable trusses into place for touring concerts and shows.
CHANNEL
- Control of a single lamp. Usually refers to a controller or means of control.
- A complete control path for signals in lighting or sound equipment.
In a lighting deskthe channels are directly controllable by the lighting operator. Within the deskthe channels are "patched" to a dimmer or dimmers which the desk then sends a signal to depending on the level of the channel.
CHASE
- A repeated sequence of changing lighting states. A chase can be produced easily by the effects functions of a computerized lighting desk. There are standalone units designed to chase lighting circuits electronically in time to music (sound to light) or mechanically as a repeated sequence (as used in early neon signs).
- A sequence of lighting changes.
- A series of lights that turn on and off in a repeated sequence.
- A lighting design term referring to a group of lights which are turned on and off in a sequence. A chase can be as simple as a single string of lights flashed sequentially around a sign by a mechanical or electronic switching device (chaser or chase unit)or by utilizing the chase (or effect) functions of a computer memory consolea chase can be a complex multi-part cues affecting large groups of lighting instruments.
CHEAT SHEET
A smaller version of the lighting planused by the lighting designer during the lighting plot. Also known as a Dimmer Layout or Magic Sheet.
CHECK
Opposite of Build; a smooth diminishment of light or sound level.
CHIAROSCURO
In Lighting or Scenic design (and the Art world)Chiaroscuro means the use of contrasts of light and shadeespecially in order to enhance the depiction of character and for general dramatic effect. Many painters are said to be masters of Chiaroscuro (especially RembrandtCaravaggio etc.). From the Italian words chiaro 'clearbright' and oscuro 'dark'.
