BACK LIGHT
A lighting design term referring to any light which comes primarily from
behind the actor, musician, or object being lit. Backlighting is associated
with strong highlights or halo effects.
BACK CURTAIN
Rear curtain or back drop.
BACK LIGHT
Any light which comes from behind the subject being lit to separate the
subject from the background.
BACK STAGE
Area beyond the acting area towards the rear wall.
BAFFLE
A single opaque or translucent element that shields the direct view at
certain angles of a light source, absorbs or block unwanted light, or
reflects or redirects light.
BALLYHOO
A followspot move in which the operators continuously move the beam in a
figure-eight motion around the stage or audience. This term is also used to
describe similar movements performed by moving lights.
BALLAST
There are two types of ballast Electronic or Inductive, they both do the
same job of limiting the current flowing into Arc Lamps or Fluorescent
lamps.
BARNDOOR
Metal panels used in front of fixtures to control light spill.
BARE-ENDS
An electrical term referring to the ends of a feeder cable set which do not
have any permanent connector attached to them. Bare ends are often used to
tie dimmer feeder cable into a house power supply or company switch.
BEAM SPREAD
The width of a light beam, expressed in degrees. The beam of light from a
reflector-type lamp (PAR, R, ER, or MR) can be thought of as a cone. The
beam spread is the angular width of the cone. Common beam spreads are known
as spot, narrow, narrow flood and flood.
