BACK CURTAIN
Rear curtain or back drop.

BACK LIGHT

  • A lighting design term referring to any light which comes primarily from behind the actor, musician, or object being lit. Backlighting is associated with strong highlights or halo effects.
  • Any light which comes from behind the subject being lit to separate the subject from the background.

BACK STAGE
Area beyond the acting area towards the rear wall.

BACKLIGHT / BACK LIGHT
Light coming from upstage, behind scenery or actors, to sculpt and separate them from the background

BACK-UP
A section of a lighting control board (sometimes a separate unit) which provides an alternative method of control should the main board fail.

BAFFLE

  • A sheet of material used to prevent a spill of light in a lantern or in part of a set.
  • A panel in a loudspeaker cabinet designed to reduce back interference noise by isolating the front and rear of the loudspeaker diaphragm.
  • A panel in an auditorium positioned so as to reduce sound reflections and improve the acoustics of the space.
  • What most of this jargon will do to any non-technical theatrical type.
  • A single opaque or translucent element that shields the direct view at certain angles of a light source, absorbs or block unwanted light, or reflects or redirects light.

BAKELITE
Early type of thermosetting plastic often used for electrical plugs and sockets. Has a distinctive fishy (ammonia) smell when burning.

BALLAST
There are two types of ballast Electronic or Inductive, they both do the same job of limiting the current flowing into Arc Lamps or Fluorescent lamps.
